Learning to Manage Your Time Will Not Be Easy, But It Will Be Energizing!

“The greatest amount of wasted time is the time not getting started.” (Dawson Trotman)

Do you feel that you have too much to do and not enough time to do it? Do you feel overwhelmed? Do you not know where to start? Does everything seem to be a priority and yet not as much as you’d like is getting done? Is paperwork taking over your desk, your office, your life? Do you work long hours to take care of things you can’t get done during “regular” working hours? Do you get totally stressed out because of all the things you are not getting done? Do you find it difficult to say “No”? Do people around you drive you crazy because their inefficiency slows you down? Do you continually face crisis after crisis? Would you like real results for the amount of time and effort you put into the things you do? Do you wonder if you really are accomplishing what you want most in your professional and personal lives?

You are not alone! Many people answer “Yes!” to these questions. And you are about to receive a gift. The gift is that YOU can effectively deal with these questions and finally accomplish what is most important to you and get some balance in your life! As the saying goes, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” Well, not this time. Read on …..

Why do you feel that you never have enough time? Why do you feel frustrated, overwhelmed and unproductive?

The answer is actually very simple. Most of us have been taught or educated to work in our chosen professions. Very few of us have been taught how to work effectively and efficiently. Most of us have been brought up to understand the value of having a family. Very few of us have been taught how to actually manage all the things that happen every day as a result of having a family. Very few of us have been taught the “nuts and bolts” of working in an office or running a household. In your business, when did you receive any basic training in how to manage the day-to-day activities of your business? And, if you are a parent, were you required to take a certification course in the fine art of being a parent before you had your children?

So, what do we do? How do we deal with our lack of training and education in these areas? We see a fellow worker using an organizer or a BlackBerry so we run out and buy one. We observe the people around us and think that they have it all together and then try to do what they are doing because if it works for them it certainly will work for us. Often, this approach is somewhat successful. And we become comfortable with these tools and devices, but soon discover that they are not as effective as we had hoped.

Why does this happen? Because the routines we establish in using these wonderful tools and devices are NOT based on the principles of effective work organization and time management. Think about it – does using an electronic device to keep track of all of your tasks really help you get the work done? It certainly helped you in creating a long list of tasks for you to worry about. And I wonder how much time you spent creating that list and then managing it over and over and over again.
